But arms and legs stick out and the siblings squabble and tug. They do
not realize that they would all fit if they just moved closer together.

Blanket Stories: Guidelines for Visual Arts, Music, and Other Media

Overview:

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists of all disciplines. Poets, please see our poetry guidelines.

MEDIUM: No restrictions on medium selection. We ask that artists directly respond to the Blanket Story parable in a personal and thoughtful manner. The interpretive materials you choose are up to you. Visual art, music, or other media may be accompanied by written reflective narrative as well as a poetic entry.  Completed visual work can be two or three dimensional as well as mixed and/or digital media. Any questions can be forwarded to Ann Teed at visuals@BlanketStories.net.

SIZE AND WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS: Visual artwork should not exceed 6 feet and should not weigh more than 30 pounds. (Exceptions can be approved beforehand addressing transport and installation concerns for exhibition purposes.)

NUMBER OF ENTRIES: Artists may submit no more than 3 pieces of individual artwork. If a work is a collection within one series, this must be stated in the submission. Individuals may also submit a collaborative group project. All names of the participants must be included in the submission. * Please use one form for each individual submission unless work is presented in a series.

THREE OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE

PUBLICATION: Visual artists have the opportunity to be selected for the Blanket Stories Publication. Deadline for submission has passed: January 1, 2014

ART EXHIBITION: Submitted visual artwork will be entered into a juried exhibition which will take place at the Macy Gallery, Teachers College – Columbia University located in NYC. The Blanket Stories Exhibition will be held June 2nd through the 20th with a launch event on June 6th, 5-7pm. At this event, we will be celebrating the full Blanket Stories Project including artwork of all disciplines, as well as the printed publication with select poems and visual art.

ONLINE SHOWCASE: Blanket Stories will also publish an online showcase on the Blanket Stories web site. This showcase will include all artworks submitted even if not selected for printed publishing or exhibition. The online showcase will stay on our web site at least through 2014.

FOR THE EXHIBITION (IF SELECTED):

IF SELECTED FOR EXHIBITION: the original artwork will be shipped to New York City in May 2014, and will be the full responsibility of the artist. Exact dates will be determined. Artwork may also be brought to our exhibit location by the artist following our guidelines.

SHIPPING: All shipping and shipping insurance costs for artwork to and from New York City are the responsibility of the artist. Make sure your shipping box is sturdy enough to reuse for return shipping. Prepaid return postage and a pre-addressed mailing label must accompany all artwork. Our preferred carrier is FedEx, ground or air. No COD’s.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS: Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this open call. Return shipping of artwork will be handled via the carrier of artist’s choice.  Pre-paid, ready to-ship shipping labels and customs documents must be provided by artist.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE: The exhibitors shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in their possession. The exhibition space shall be strictly liable to the artist for any loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES OF ARTIST: Artist hereby represents and warrants to Blanket Stories that she or he is the creator of the artwork; and is the owner of all rights to the artwork and their use as granted to gallery in this agreement, and has not assigned, pledged or otherwise encumbered the same; that the artwork is original; and she or he has the full power to enter into this agreement and to make the grants herein contained. Artist further warrants that the artwork does not, in whole or in part, infringe upon any copyright or violate any right to privacy or other personal or property right whatsoever, and does not contain any matter of a libelous or scandalous nature and/or any matter otherwise contrary to law. Artist hereby agrees to indemnify and hold gallery harmless from any and all claims, including but not limited to, all third party claims, demands, suits, actions, judgments, losses, costs, damages (direct, indirect or consequential), attorney’s fees and expenses Blanket Stories might sustain or incur as a result of Blanket Stories’ participation in this agreement.
